Description

Panelists are clinicians and academics who have been at the forefront in providing trauma-informed dentistry to survivors of significant human rights abuses through collaborations with Torture Treatment Programs in the US. There will be discussions of some of the common issues and problems facing survivors in terms of dental care (both through trauma and neglect), as well as best practices in engaging the population for these specialized services. Speakers will share their experiences of how to best engage dentistry students in these clinical processes. They will also discuss the processes by which they have created, maintained and funded their initiatives.

Who should attend?

Staff of torture rehabilitation programs that are funded by the Office of Refugee Resettlement and/or are members of the National Consortium of Torture Treatment Programs as well as others who provide services to survivors of torture and other human rights abuses. This session is designed for service providers and dental providers working with survivors of torture and forced migration populations.

Diya Kallivayalil, PhD

Diya Kallivayalil PhD, is the Co-director of the Cambridge Health Alliance Asylum Program CHAAP) and an Assistant Professor (part time) in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. Her clinical specialty is in the treatment of trauma-related disorders. She is a member of the task force for human rights of the American Psychological Association. She has published in the areas of complex trauma, gender-based violence, homicide bereavement, and refugee health.

Robert Marlin, MD, PhD, MPH


Board certified in Internal Medicine, Dr. Marlin joined Lowell Community Health Center in 2019 and serves as the Chief of the Metta Health Center, which focuses on refugee health. He also previously served as the Chief of the Department of Family Medicine. In addition to primary care internal medicine, he is trained in health policy and medical anthropology. Prior to coming to Lowell, Dr. Marlin served for 13 years as the founding director of the Coordinated Care Program for Political Violence Survivors at the Cambridge Health Alliance. His interests include refugee health and the development of multidisciplinary, integrated models of care for underserved populations. He also teaches refugee health to medical students.

Sarah Greenlaw-Quinton, DMD

Dr. Greenlaw-Quinton came to Lowell Community Health Center as a general dentist when the Nancy L. and Richard K. Donahue Dental Center opened in 2018. She currently serves as the Chief of Dental Services. She has previously taught dental students on community health center externships, served as co-director for a multi-disciplinary collaboration treating the Wampanoag Tribe of Martha’s Vineyard, and was the Lead Dentist for a pediatric dental mission trip. She is a member of the National Network of Oral Health Access, American Dental Association, Massachusetts Dental Society, and Merrimack Valley District Dental Society.
