Strengthening Case Management Webinar Series
- Strengthening Case Management: The Value of the Therapeutic Dimension: While this webinar does not advocate that case managers become therapists, it suggests they adapt psychoanalytic theory to their jobs in order to promote “empathetic connections” and “safe spaces” in their relationships with clients. As such, this webinar is intended for case managers and their coworkers.
- Strengthening Case Management: Containment with Clients: This webinar is intended for case managers (CMs) who work with clients that are unable to control their emotions during stressful situations. To begin, participants review the relationship between emotion, stress, and the brain. Participants then learn three containment strategies appropriate for CMs to use with emotionally unstable clients. This webinar focuses on best practices for CMs to use during client eligibility screenings.
- Strengthening Case Management: Introducing Narrative Concepts: This webinar presents narrative therapy as a potential approach for case managers to apply when working with torture survivors. Using narrative concepts, case managers can use therapeutic questioning to help clients recognize and reflect on their current problems and to empower clients to reexamine and reframe their lives. Please note this webinar does not qualify anyone to do narrative therapy.
- Strengthening Case Management: Case Management and the Suicidal Client: This webinar is designed for case managers who work with clients who have attempted suicide or expressed suicidal ideation. While mental health staff is responsible for the evaluation and treatment of suicidal clients, survivors may also reach out to case managers for help during times of crisis. For this reason, case managers should also be prepared to identify risk factors, protective factors, and become familiar with basic suicide intervention skills. This webinar will present the QPR method (Question, Persuade, Refer) as a culturally-sensitive, case management appropriate response to suicide intervention.
Case Management 101 Video Training Series
- Case Management 101: Client Boundaries: This video describes how to set boundaries as a case manager working with survivors of torture. It defines boundaries and their role in the professional setting, identifies five categories of boundaries, recognizes common boundary violations, and establishes best practices to use in setting and maintaining boundaries.
- Case Management 101: Writing Case Notes: This video advises case managers for torture survivors on writing good case notes. It includes what case notes are and why good case notes are important, what makes a good case note, provides a structure for writing good case notes, and introduces the concept of the mental status observation, which can be useful in writing case notes.
Solution-Focused Counseling Video Training Series
Solution-Focused Counseling: This three-part training video series defines solution-focused (or task-focused) counseling as a short-term, practical, strengths-based approach that focuses on identifying client concerns. Key features of this approach include:
- Resilience- and strengths-focused
- Action-oriented, no insight-focused
- Present-focused rather than examining a client’s past
- Using a collaborative relationship
- It breaks problems into manageable pieces, and focuses on one issue at a time
Torture Survivors and their Power: Strengths Based Case Management: This webinar discusses the theory and methods behind strengths-based care and uses a case study to examine way to implement a strengths-based approach to the most challenging client cases.
