This webinar, from 5/16/2007, features speakers from the Center for Justice and Accountability. It is presented as a part of the National Capacity Building (NCB) webinar series. NCB is a project of the Center for Victims of Torture.
Description:
International Justice-accountability for genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity -is a crucial element of establishing respect for human rights worldwide. Through the investigation and prosecution of perpetrators of human rights violations, including torture, the international justice regime seeks to eliminate impunity in the face of such crimes. This Webinar features a representative from the Center for Justice and Accountability (CJA), a non-profit, non-governmental organization that works with government agencies and other civil society organizations to help bring human rights violators to justice. He discusses the importance of international justice in four main capacities: to deter human rights abusers; to develop human rights jurisprudence; to provide a catalyst for transitional justice; and to provide therapeutic benefit for survivors of torture. He also highlights the work that CJA has done to advance international justice, citing specific examples, and takes questions from Webinar participants at the end of his presentation.
