This webinar, from 4/11/2007, provides a collaborative examination and review of EMDR in clinical practice with special focus on its use with providing therapy to survivors of torture. It is presented as a part of the National Capacity Building (NCB) webinar series. NCB is a project of the Center for Victims of Torture.
Description:
This webinar is intended for medical professionals who have some familiarity with Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). It is not intended to serve as training in how to practice EMDR. Because of this, this webinar focuses on the application of EMDR to torture survivors rather than an examination of the process of EMDR, leaving some jargon, such as “bilateral stimulation” and “resource installation,” undefined. The webinar includes a brief overview of EMDR, including a broad outline of an average session. The webinar also covers, in more depth, the benefits and drawbacks of using EMDR with both asylum speakers and torture survivors. For example, participants discuss, regarding asylum cases, the evidentiary potential of testimony gained through EMDR and any repercussions the use of EMDR would have on the tenuous legal status of asylum seekers. Also discussed, regarding torture survivors and clients exhibiting physical symptoms, is the value of EMDR as a largely non-verbal and potentially cross-cultural therapeutic technique. Finally, links to resources and training materials are provided at the end of the conference.
